Malaysian authorities must halt misuse of power against political activist and human rights defenders

[MEDIA LINES]
The Malaysian authorities must immediately halt the misuse of the criminal justice system to harass and intimidate political activists and human rights defenders for their peaceful activities.
On 16 August, women’s activists Ho Yoke Ling and Ivy Josiah have been summoned for investigations for their participation in the #BebasMaria (Free Maria) Women’s walk on 23 November 2016, which encouraged women to speak up against Maria Chin’s unjust detention under national security laws.
Amnesty International Malaysia condemns the government’s response to peaceful activities through the use of selective/baseless police investigations and calls for the authorities to protect, recognise and value the work of human rights defenders in Malaysia.
