AIM Online Human Rights Academy 2021

Apply now!

Amnesty International Malaysia (AIM) and its Youth Committee are delighted to announce the launch of the Virtual AIM Human Rights Academy (HRA) for youth in Malaysia. Through this Academy, participants will learn about the fundamentals of human rights and be exposed to key human rights issues such as freedom of expression, assembly and association, rights of migrants and refugees, right to fair trial, and the issue of the death penalty in Malaysia.

About the HRA

From 18 September to 4 December, the HRA will have 5 training sessions (i.e. 1 per month). This series of training will be interactive and youth-focused. There will also be opportunities to engage with external speakers and rights-holders and participate in Amnesty International’s ongoing actions and campaigns. All sessions will be held on weekend afternoons to ensure that they are accessible to the public. The academy calendar will be updated soon.

Objective:
– strengthen human rights knowledge and understanding
– create a space for young people to build their skills and capacity in campaigning and activism
– build networks and a sense of community amongst Amnesty youth members

Participation: HRA participants must commit to attending all sessions, as the sessions build upon the knowledge and discussions from previous weeks, and seeks to foster a sense of community. In order to enable meaningful discussions, the training will be capped at 15 participants. Participants will be expected to commit between 3-4 hours/month, inclusive of non-training activities.

All sessions will be held online — in order to enable better access, financial support for internet access is available on a needs basis (see application form). The sessions will be held primarily in English. You do not need to be an advanced English speaker, conversational English would suffice!

Eligibility: Anyone currently attending a high school (Year 10-13/ Form 4-6)/ Grade 9-12), pre-university, college, or university in Malaysia can join the Academy. Please note that priority will be given to Amnesty’s youth members.

Application Dateline: Please submit this form by Tuesday, 14 September. You will receive a notification from us by 16 September.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the Academy.
